Welcome to the Music Room! Here's what we learn throughout the year:

Kindergarden: Kindergarden learns concepts of high and low sounds and long and short sounds. They also learn how to sing long sounds and the importance of air. This Little Light, and Down By The Bay are a few of our favorite songs. We learn about instruments too- shakers/scrapers, drums, metal, and wood instruments. We really like exploring movement to music using the scarves.

First grade: Their favorite songs are All Around the Kitchen and Bakery Shop. We've also learned a song called Little Blue Top and are using the information we've been learning in science and our classroom about penguins to write a few verses about penguins.

Second grade: Their favorite songs are A sailor went out to sea, Take me out to the ballgame, and I have a car. We learn to play and identify the meter in 3, and quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes, and quarter rests.

Third grade: Their favorite songs are Rocky Mountain, Frog went A-courtn', and Jubilee. In this year, we add the sixteenth note to our Note Family. We also learn to add instruments to our songs.

Fourth grade: We start learning to play the soprano recorder in November. Once we can play all the notes in a C major scale we work on songs like Hot Air and Holey Fingers. We also spend some of our time learning songs about Washington State history. We learn Roll on Colombia written by Woodie Guthrie about the Colombia River, and about the San Juan Pig, from the late 1800's Pig War that took place on San Juan Island between the British and Americans.

Fifth grade:. In fifth grade we learn songs from the early 1800's that correlate with what we're learning in social studies. Over the year we work on our music theory by continuing our understanding of meter, note valves, sharps, and flats.

Sixth grade: Starting in September we travel through music of the 1900's. We learn about Ragtime, jazz, blues, swing, shoo-bob, country, folk songs, rock n' roll, heavy metal, and other genves of music. We also discuss how much has been a reflection of events in society and a way for people to communicate their opinions and ideas. Interspersed into this journey are dances that we learn, like Swing and the Hustle.
