Our "camera obscura", or pinhole cameras, consisted of a light-proof box (ours were cardboard) with a tiny hole at one end, (ours were typically 0.016" dia.) and photographic paper (the film) on the other end. We exposed the film by uncovering and recovering the pinhole with a piece of black tape. Our exposure times were between 20 seconds to 30 minutes, depending on the brightness. After exposing the paper, we took it out in our darkroom and each of us got to develop our own pictures. .
